Description:
Ethics is foundational for mission. Yet, few consider the relation between mission and ethics. This module aims to introduce the relation between mission and ethics and the key areas of concern which every missionary and minister who strives to remain faithful to God’s mission must be aware of. Subject matters such as ethical systems (utilitarianism, deontological ethics, etc.), missional ethics in the Bible, ethics and missional community, ethics and contextualization (socio-political, cultural, economics), ethics and mission practices (e.g. unethical proselytization), and ethical framework in mission will be explored. The scope of these discussions will not be limited to missions in a foreign context but also the context of local “missionary” church. Students are expected to develop an awareness of the importance of ethical consideration in their mission involvement. The module is also designed to ensure that students can apply the lessons in practice.
14 classes of 2 hours
Aim:
1. To instill an awareness of Christian Ethics in the minds of practitioners of missions and church ministers
2. To explore the various aspects and dimensions of Christian ethical thinking, especially through its biblical basis
Outcome:
Upon completing this module, students will be able:
1. To describe the relationship between mission and ethics.
2. To demonstrate their knowledge on mission ethics in the Bible.
3. To have some basic ideas about ethical systems and a clear framework to engage with ethical issues in missions.
Method of Delivery:
1. The lectures will be delivered during class time. Students are encouraged to interact with the lecturer within class time.
2. Suggested readings will be introduced, and students are expected to interact with the readings outside of the class
Assessments:
Essay (100%)
Write an essay which describes an ethical issue in mission and the approach you take to handle it or respond to it. Include the following in the essay:
a. A clear description of the issue (why is it an ethical issue in missions)
b. Clarify the nature of the issue by comparing it with similar issues (historical or contemporary)
c. Explain your choice of ethical system or presuppositions when approaching this issue
d. Produce, substantiate, and outline the practical action plans to respond to the issue.
